Itinerary

01

Day 1: San Jose - Guapiles - Tortuguero National Park

Leaving the bustling capital of San Jose and make your way through your first taste of Costa Rican paradise! You’ll encounter weather, temperature and landscape variations as you cross the Braulio Carrillo Cloud Forest National Park. Take in Guapiles and the Caribbean lowlands – one of the largest banana plantations in the world. Upon reaching Tortuguero National Rain Forest, you’ll be able to spot wildlife such as sloths, monkeys, crocodiles and turtles as you pass through the Tortuguero canals on an included boat ride. Your day ends with a visit to the small village of Tortuguero.

Meals Included: Lunch & dinner included

02

Day 2: Guapiles - Arenal Volcano National Park

Fill up on breakfast – another adventurous day awaits! This morning, you’ll jump back aboard the boat for another canal ride back to your van. Watch and listen as the forest comes alive to the sound of birds and other animals, and don't forget your camera! As you make your way through more of the Guapiles area and across the San Carlos Lowlands, you’ll pass both rural and urban scenery. Keep an eye on the skyline for the Arenal Volcano – you’ll get the chance to see it up close tomorrow!

Meals Included: Lunch included

03

Day 3: Arenal Volcano National Park

After lying dormant for 400 years, the Arenal Volcano erupted in 1968 – and has been erupting on a smaller scale ever since. With an almost perfect cone and a 140-metre-deep crater formed over an ancient caldera, it's like something out of a movie set. You have the day in the park to explore the area, taking in both the Arenal and the smaller, lesser-known Chato Volcano, which has been inactive for 3500 years and has a collapsed crater with a picture-perfect lagoon. You might also want to take a walk across the stunning hanging bridges; you won't forget the awesome views from some of the highest bridges in Costa Rica. If you’re looking for adventure, you can opt to unleash your inner Tarzan with a canopy tour – with a rope swing in the middle of the forest reaching 30m in height, it’s a must-do for adrenaline junkies!

Meals Included: Breakfast included

Optional Activities:

  • Biking tour US$55
  • Hanging bridges guided canopy walk US$60
  • Sky Tram gondola US$40
  • Sky Tram night tour with canopy sky trek US$70
  • Sky Trek zip lines US$70

04

Day 4: Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve

Make a beeline for Arenal Lake, the largest and most important freshwater lake in Costa Rica. There's no better way to experience it than to board a boat for a scenic ride and listen to your guide talk about the lush rainforest, farms and mountains that surround the lake. Next up, continue by land along a dirt track road to Monteverde, founded by a group of Quaker farmers in the 1950s and today a town which oozes charm. Take a hike inside the humid grounds of Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve. The high humidity is thanks to the warm winds that come from both oceans (the Pacific and the Caribbean) which collide together, and it's a great spot for diverse and plentiful flora and fauna. See if you can spot purple mayflowers and coyol palms! Different species of trees, orchids and lichens are easily found, as well as bird species including the Resplendent Quetzal, hummingbirds, Black Guans, toucans and many more. You may also spot Howler Monkeys in the trees.

Meals Included: Breakfast included

05

Day 5: Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve

We told you to get a good night’s sleep – an early morning hike will introduce you to the wonders of this fascinating 24,700 acre biological reserve. The lush forest surroundings take you past moss and fern covered trees, espaves and mayflowers with their purple blooms, coyol palms, bastard cedars, gumbo-limbos and wild cottons.  As altitude increases, the vegetation becomes more stunted and twisted, evidence of fierce winds that have blown through the area. Over 400 species of bird live in Monteverde, along with exotic frogs. After your morning hike, you’ll have the chance to explore the park in more depth on your own. You could opt to walk across the hanging bridges, accompanied by a guide who'll show you the multicolour world of the tropical rainforest below. The Sky Walk is a combination of suspension bridges and walking trails, with views guaranteed to leave you breathless.

Meals Included: Breakfast included

Optional Activities:

  • Night hiking US$25-$35
  • Hanging bridges canopy walk US$35-$45
  • Zip lining US$40-50
  • Frog Pond Museum US$15-$20
  • Horse riding US$50

Day 6: Rincon De La Vieja National Park

Travel the Pan American Highway and head north, passing by the cities of Canas and Liberia before arriving in Rincon de la Vieja. Experience the thrill of our included tubing experience on a 400 metre mountain water slide which cuts its way through some of Costa Rica's tropical forests. It's a totally refreshing experience; pure adventure and excitement which you won't forget in a hurry!

Meals Included: Breakfast included

07

Day 7: Samara Beach

If you want to explore more of Rincon de la Vieja, there's loads to see, including an active stratovolcano at 1916m above sea level, giant old-growth trees and an abundance of wildlife. At the foot of the southern flank of the volcano you can enjoy Las Pailas with over 133 acres of hot springs, sulphuric lakes and holes that eject clouds of steam. Late morning the beach calls, so we answer with a trip to stunning Samara Beach.

Meals Included: Breakfast included

08

Day 8: Samara Beach

With a day free to live the beach life, you’ll be able to beat the crowds at one of Costa Rica’s lesser-known but incredibly beautiful vacation spots. Offering a more authentic feel than the country’s bigger resorts, this thriving fishing and farming community is home to exotic fruit, tree nurseries and restoration projects. Rows of palm trees and soft, near-white sand makes it the perfect place for some downtime. Grab a drink at one of the beachside bars, take a dip in the gentle, shallow waters or simply watch the world go by. Can’t sit still? Get into some of the area’s popular watersports, including stand-up paddle boarding and kayaking.

The perfect blend of adrenaline, hiking, wildlife and relaxation. It was as if someone reached into my head and designed the perfect trip for me. The group size was perfect and our Tour Guide and Driver were amazing, they had so much knowledge to share about everywhere we travelled. The best part was that I didn't once feel like a tourist, we may have been shown a slightly glamorised version of Costa Rica but it was still the real deal. I would recommend this trip to anyone who's even slightly thinking about going. I promise it's so worth it.
